Staunton 16th June 1820—

Dear Sir

The bearer Mr Hobson on his Way from Mississippi to Richmond called upon me with the enclosed letter from Govr Holmes—He is desirous of seeing Monticello before his Return to England—

I have understood he came to this Country in Company with Mr Lowndes who has recommended him to Govr Holmes with some other of his friends—

I am with respect & regard your Obt Sert

Girardin, 8 July 1820, on verso; addressed: “The honble Thomas Jefferson Esqr Monticello.” Enclosure: David Holmes to Stuart, Natchez, 10 May 1820, in which the former Mississippi governor states that “Mr Hodson from Liverpool Engld will hand you this letter, He is a respectable intelligent Gentleman, with whose acquaintance I feel confident you will be gratified I therefore recommend him to your friendly attention It is probable that on his way to Richmond he may pass through Albemarle, If that should be his determination, you will oblige me by giving him a letter to some Gentleman in the Neighbourhood of Monticello” (RC in MHi; addressed: “Archd Stuart Esq—Staunton Virginia” by “Mr Hodson”).
