Election Return for Delegates from Albemarle County

[10 April 1777]

Agreable to an Ordinance of Convention the Freeholders of Albemarle County met at the Court House of the said County on Thursday the Tenth day of April One thousand seven Hundred and Seventy Seven in Order to Elect Delegates to represent this County in General Assembly. Thomas Jefferson and Jno. Harvie Esq. were by the said freeholders chosen as representatives. Given under my Hand and Seal this 10th. day of April 1777.

MS (Vi). Endorsed: “Albemarle Thos. Jefferson & John Harvie.” Another MS (Vi), dated 9 Apr. 1778, and also signed by Isaac Davis, appointed TJ and George Gilmer delegates for Albemarle for the sessions of 1778.

Ordinance of convention: i.e., the Constitution for Virginia, 1776, sect. v and vii (Hening, description begins William W. Hening, The Statutes at Large; Being a Collection of All the Laws of Virginia description ends ix, 114–15); which provided that two delegates be elected to represent each county in the House of Delegates in accordance with the rules for elections which were already in existence under the act concerning elections passed in 1769 (Hening, description begins William W. Hening, The Statutes at Large; Being a Collection of All the Laws of Virginia description ends viii, 308–9). TJ attended the Assembly 8 May 1777 (JHD description begins Journal of the House of Delegates of the Commonwealth of Virginia (cited by session and date of publication) description ends , May 1777, 1827 edn., p. 3).
